HELPFUL SITES: (first one is the link to the LA TIMES story on the new federal law that goes into effect Feb 10, 2009 about not allowing resale of clothes and toys for kids unless they are tested for lead. I'll keep updating this because as of today 1/11/09, the law is apparently being amended again. )

Just to let you know, so that you might help spread the word, the Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) that was signed into law last year has effectively made the resale of ANY product for children aged 12 or younger a banned hazardous product unless it is tested for lead and phylatates effective February 10th. The law is retroactive and includes ANY product new or used and makes it illegal for parents to resell their used kid's stuff at these sales, through eBay, on Craig's List, through consignment stores or resale shops. If donated, it is illegal for thrifts such as Goodwill to resell them. This is not a joke.

The thrift, resale and hand-made clothing and toy businesses need all the help we can get to try and get Congress to amend this good law gone bad. Read about it in the LA Times article of January 2nd at:
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-thrift2-2009jan02,0,2083247.story

The law effectively makes it illegal to sell the stuff at these sales as of February 10th unless parents have the stuff tested first.

Please help spread the word and ask for help by contacting our legislators. Time is running short.

Thanks for this post. I have been trying to read up on more. I'll make a post about it soon. UGH... the consignment stores are going to go broke over this. Ugh. Yard sales will be abundant I guess.

let me check out that article
